The recent unsatisfying film adaptation of James’ WASHINGTON SQUARE starring Jennifer Jason-Leigh only shows how wise William Wyler was to film the Goetz’s stage version rather than retain James’s original storyline. James’s little novel about an Old New York heiress, Catherine Sloper caught in a tug-of-war between her heartless father and her fortune-hunting suitor (Morris Townsend) ends with a very Jamesian ending: Catherine learns to grow beyond her father’s and Morris’s petty battle, and in so doing shows her superiority to both of them. In adapting this novel for the stage, the Goetzes decided that such an ending (admittedly sublime on the printed page) would be hard to do onstage, and instead retain the Balzacian melodramatic air James drew upon by allowing Catherine her vengeance on father and Morris alike. The result is spellbinding. William Wyler crafted out of this melodrama one of the most hard-to-forget films of the Hollywood era, a masterful little exercise in emotional cruelty that has been championed by (among others) Martin Scorsese, who regularly lists it as one of tyhe five films that most influenced his own work.

The sets are superb, and there’s a lovely film score by Aaron Copland. But what really makes the film is the acting. There are only four major performers–Olivia De Havilland as Catherine, Sir Ralph Richardson as her father, Montgomery Clift as Morris, and Miriam Hopkins as Aunt Penniman–and all four give their best performances ever here; they seem to spur one another on to better work than you’d imagine them capable of doing. De Havilland is the one who most stands out: at first, though suitably old, she seems too beautiful to be effective as Catherine. But her fine portrayal of Catherine’s crippling shyness makes her unattractiveness to both Morris and Dr. Sloper exceptionally believeable. When Catherine undergoes her awful education, De Havilland very bravelly allows herself to change a great deal so that while she’s still Catherine you’re aware of how radically she’s changed. The highlight of the entire film is Catherine’s showdown with her father, when she more than outmaneuvers him and utterly devastates him: De Havilland here does some of the acting the screen has ever seen. The scene begins with De Havilland’s words “Morris jilted me,” which she manages to deliver with about a hundred different levels of feeling, from shame at herself to almost bemused exasperation at Morris’s shallowness to fury at her father. It ends with her dramatic (and surprisingly terrifying) declaration to her broken father, “That’s it , Father–you’ll never know, will you?”, which leaves you aware not only of how thoroughly Catherine has beaten her father but at what a cost to her own soul. I can’t imagine even one of the great stage actors doing more with this scene than De Havilland does. It’s the performance of a lifetime.

THE HEIRESS is a surprisingly complex drama of paternal brutality, starry-eyed love, and bitter revenge. Director William Wyler adapted Henry James’ short novel WASHINGTON SQUARE and during the film’s nearly two hours managed to convey the collision of conflicting dreams. Each of the three major characters: Ralph Richardson as Doctor Sloper, Olivia de Havilland as his dowdy daughter Catherine Sloper, and Montgomery Clift as the mercenary Morris Townsend all dance a three-partnered minuet in which emotional ties clasp and unclasp in ways that are suggested more by gentle innuendo than by overt deed. Doctor Sloper is a uncaring brute who rules his house with vicious wit and the threat of withheld inheritance. To him, there are two kinds of men: those who have already made their mark in the world (like him) and those who have not (like Morris) but seek to obtain it deceitfully through marriage to plain but rich women (like Catherine). The more Sloper puts Catherine down with harsh barbs, the more he increases the inevitability that Catherine will someday rebel by latching onto the first glib male golddigger, thereby proving himself right all along. Sloper’s problem is that his paternal tunnel vision does not allow the possibility that Catherine might be more than a one-dimensional stick figure forever doomed to spinsterhood. For Catherine, life is a gilded cage, plenty of the physical necessities, but not a whit of the emotional ones. The more she is starved for affection, the more she will reach out even to those men like Morris who are likely mercenary. One of the film’s bitter ironies is that her father’s oft repeated warnings about Morris’s motivations might yet be valid. When Morris promises to elope with her, then abruptly changes his mind after finding out that Catherine will be disinherited, his disappearance results in one of filmdom’s most tragic of underplayed scenes–that of her waiting forelornly for a doorknock that does not come. For Morris, his motivation as a gigolo is not crystal clear. He may very well be as mercenary as Doctor Sloper accuses, or he may humanely have concluded that it is better to dump Catherine at the mock alter of the Sloper door than to risk leaving her destitute.

THE HEIRESS is a movie of several memorable scenes, nearly all of which take place within the Sloper living room. When Morris fails to appear, Catherine expects a modicum of understanding from her father. Instead he delivers yet his most vicious of cutting remarks. Catherine replies that she would have married him anyway, knowing that he did not love her, if only he would have offered the illusion of warmth and human contact. The closing scene in which Catherine orders her maid ‘Bolt the door, Maria,’ shows that the passing of time has done more to harden her heart against a man who just may be as greedy as charged–or perhaps his earlier explanation that he wished not to impoverish her may be true. We never know his motivation, but THE HEIRESS makes clear hers. When she defends her decision to seek revenge against Morris, Catherine replies coldly, that of cruelty, ‘I have been taught by masters.’ The bolting of the door is the symbolic equivalent of the closing of her heart. It is no surprise that Morris’s loud pounding on the Sloper door does not resonate with a heart that has learned only too well the lessons taught by Doctor Sloper.

If you liked the original ODD COUPLE – slob and compulsive neatnik thrown together in the same apartment – or HEAVEN KNOWS, MR. ALLISON – tough guy WWII Marine marooned on an enemy-held South Pacific island with a pretty nun, then you should enjoy FATHER GOOSE starring Cary Grant, Leslie Caron and Trevor Howard. I saw it once again on the telly this past weekend while doing the ironing, and I’m fortunate to be old enough to have an appreciation of all three films.

Grant is Walter Eckland, an antisocial, unkempt escapee from “civilization” that spends his time bumming around the South Seas on an old yacht. At the start of WWII, he’s coerced into service as a “coast watcher”, an observer stationed on a remote island as a lookout for Japanese planes or ships, by the wily and dry-witted local Royal Navy authority figure, Comdr. Houghton (Howard). Eckland is bribed with booze to perform in His Majesty’s service. One of his first assignments is to boat over to another island and rescue a fellow coast watcher. But, on arriving, he finds only his colleague’s grave and the Caron character, Catherine Freneau, the daughter of a French government official, who’s been stranded with a bevy of underage schoolgirls of which she has charge. Walter naturally takes them back to his island and his hovel, where the differences between the two adults soon surface. To Eckland, Freneau becomes “Goody Two Shoes”, while, to the latter, her knight in stained armor becomes the “Filthy Beast”.

While admittedly silly entertainment, FATHER GOOSE is a delightful romantic comedy that doesn’t, like some of the current Tinseltown offerings, rely for laughs on sensitive body parts being caught in zippers, bodily fluids masquerading as hair gel, or carnal knowledge of apple pies. This film has Class, chiefly due to the presence of Grant, who character demonstrates more suavity unshaven and without socks than any one of today’s crop of male actors dressed up in a tux. (Perhaps only Sean Connery, Robert Redford and Paul Newman are close to being in the same league.) Caron’s strong-willed and very feminine Freneau is more than a match for Eckland’s obstinately boorish masculinity – a pairing made in heaven, or at least Hollywood.

Perhaps my high esteem for this film is more a function of nostalgia. But there’re a lot of other films from that same period of my youth that are eminently forgettable, so I have to think that FATHER GOOSE is a cut above.

Cary Grant is cast as Walter Eckland in this very funny classic comedy. His normal sexy leading man characteristics are downplayed to let his comedic genius shine through. He stars opposite Leslie Caron cast as Catherine Freneau. They are an accident waiting for a place to happen at their first meeting, and it just gets worse from there. Walter is bribed and threatened into service as a watcher in WWII. Catherine is a diplomat’s daughter given the responsibility of escorting several school children into a safer area. When they are all stranded together, the hilarity, and battle of the sexes begins.

This is one of my favorite comedies, and one of Cary Grant’s last movies. No one does it like he does. A great film that the entire family can enjoy together.

My 18 month daughter was captivated by this video. She is a big Teletubbies fan, and she absolutely loves animals, so it doesn’t get much better than this for her. It’s very cute.

This is the least watched Teletubbie video in our house. However, it’s my favorite out of all of them. I’m not sure why my kids haven’t really gotten ‘into’ it.

Each little segment is about animals- a dog, a lamb and more. The Teletubbies sing about Mary and her little lamb, and more. I think the penguin part is fantastic.

Although the whole video is about animals, it is broken down into little segments that make it easier to reach a ‘good stopping point’ for children, so the option is there to only watch a short segment of it.

I use this video (and all others and TV) as a time for my kids to wind down at the end of the day or just prior to nap. A short time to just sit and turn off their brains for a few minutes. I know about the controversy surrounding the Teletubbies, but I just refuse to believe that this video teaching anything bad. It’s a cute video with cute little Teletubbies who are sweet and caring and gentle with animals and each other.

I’m looking for my beget copy of this movie because it is one of my all-time favorites…comfort food for my soul. I can be totally down in the dumps and all I need is to peer this movie. It never fails to pick my spirits and get me laugh, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I can recite every word of the script by now. I’m tired of renting it, though–now I want to gain it! Cusack is vivid. It was the first time I ever saw him, and I’ve been a devoted fan ever since. Purchase Reiner and everyone in the cast did such a titanic job–I like all the scenes with Tim Robbins. I was in college when this came out and honest to display its timeless appeal–I can explain it to unusual college-aged people and they adore it too! About the only thing that dates the movie besides a few 80s expressions like “well-behaved” is Anthony Edwards’ exhilaration about using a cordless phone by the pool! The humor, heart and romance of this movie continue to be au courant, due to huge writing, acting and direction.

My celebrated (and oft-quoted line) : “Spontaneity has its time and its residence!”

This movie is a cult-classic in my (wife’s) family, so we’ve all seen it a dozen times or more. Obvious, people will dismiss this movie as a teen, lightweight, romantic comedy. Maybe it is, but it’s also hillarious and well acted and packed with lines that you’ll catch yourself quoting throughout life (”we command each others unspoken language, – fluently”) . Personally, I contemplate this is John Cusak’s best acting role ever. Even the smaller parts (such as Tim Robbins’ are hillarious) .

Additionally, this DVD has tremendous features. For example you can leer in either widescreen or normal mode. You also have the option of turning on the director’s (Acquire Reiner) commentary so you can listen to him remark over the movie giving his comments on the actors, scenes, etc. There’s also a trivia feature that will play the movie while popping up small triva-blurbs on each cloak. There are also “featurettes” that discuss the casting, wardrobe, etc.

Some DVD’s are simply the VHS movie effect on a different media, but this one is packed with stout features – plus it’s a immense movie!

I cautiously first went to gawk “My Cousin Vinny” when Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, because–unlike many people–I don’t like Joe Pesci. I aloof don’t like Joe Pesci, BUT the role of Vincent LaGuardia Gambini in “My Cousin Vinny” is perfect for him, and his performance is stellar. For me Joe Pesci is Vincent Gambini and Vincent Gambini is Joe Pesci. And, it was my view when I first saw “My Cousin Vinny,” as it is now after watching the DVD I fair got, that Marisa Tomei more than deserved the Oscar. It is my conception, moreover, that many times award winning performances are discredited by viewers because the actor is performing so well that it appears they are not acting at all. (Please tag that I count myself among those who scrutinize the Oscars as politically driven; so, when I agree with them–which is seldom–I am truly standing up to be counted) .

The product description does a fine job of describing the yarn outline; although it hardly makes “My Cousin Vinny” sound nearly as silly as it is. But the movie is about more than two kids from the city mistakenly arrested for destroy in (the implicitly implied “redneck”) Alabama. The film is a light-hearted seek of culture clashes, where all characters have stereotypical traits and stereotype the other characters themselves. The movie is also about assumptions–along with the inherent concern of such–and how the “meaning” of these assumptions vary with regards to experience and socialization. “My Cousin Vinny” also examines gender roles–and it is here that Tomei shines–and education/science versus experience and favorite knowledge. But, most importantly, “My Cousin Vinny” demonstrates the importance of “doing the lawful thing,” regardless of the consequences (and in some cases the legality of the action) . Pesci’s character finally “gets it,” and is able to score his way; but only through the assistance of Tomei’s character and the trust of Billy Gambini (inconsistently performed by Ralph Macchio) .

As for the other reviewer’s triad about the language in this DVD version of the movie, as compared to the bleeped television version, I have these comments: 1) the movie is rated “R,” which should have informed you about the probability of profanity; 2) while it may seem like there is a lot of profanity in the movie, it is completely applicable to the map these characters would actually speak–and I suspect that there is actually less profanity than it sounds like; 3) when “My Cousin Vinny” was made (1992), most movies were challenging towards increased consume of profanity–especially “R” rated movies; and 4) is overt profanity that distinguished worse than suggested or ribald “comedy? ” Moreover, unprejudiced how does the sudden inclusion of (generally appropriately veteran) profanity into any dialog–films or otherwise–change the humor or do it no longer comical? In fact, I personally hear fair as remarkable, if not more, profanity conventional by children, teenagers, adults, and seniors at the store than in the movie; which I occupy is unpleasant misuse of profanity, but is the diagram of life today. For me, and I am distinct many others, a titanic amusing movie, is a expansive humorous movie in spite of the language. Remember, there was a day when movies couldn’t even rely on language to be silly.

Now for the mystery I am having pains understanding: Why is this version of the DVD/VHS not being lumped together with the other versions with regards to reviews? To date (12 June 2008), there is only one review listed for this version, while there are 129 reviews for the other version currently available. This is so uncharacteristic of Amazon! And, in come ultimate irony, it appears that there is no disagreement between this version and the other “lower priced” (I got mine when it was sale) version, other than the fact that this version has a gold cardboard slipcase (the box inside is exactly like the other one) and the listing has the detestable actors!

My goal is to provide support to potential buyers, not obtain into any arguments. When Original Yorkers Billy Gambini (played by Ralph Macchio) and Stan Rothenstein (Mitchell Whitfield) are wrongly accused of assassinate in Beechum County, Alabama, they call in a lawyer they know – Vincent “Vinny” Gambini (Joe Pesci) . He knows how to argue and how to salvage to the truth, but as a very-newly minted lawyer, does he really know what he’s doing? Everyone seems to win an instant abhor to this smooth-talking city-slicker, but Vinny isn’t going to let anything near in the diagram of his proving the boys’ innocence.

Well, I must admit that this is one of my all-time current movies. On the down-side, and it is a grand down-side, the swearing in this movie is strong and almost non-stop, with the f-bomb being thrown around like confetti on Modern Year’s Eve. But, in spite of this, the movie is so well-made that you can’t relieve but like it.

Joe Pesci is large, of course, but the rest of the cast carries their maintain weight, making ever scene in the movie really work. Marisa Tomei does an gracious job as Vinny’s fiancé Ms. Mona Lisa Vito, and Fred Gwynne brings in a stellar performance in his last major role – Consider Chamberlain Haller. Plus, I found the storyline to be non-stop comical, and the mystery to be quite captivating.

Yep, this is one of my common movies, and I reflect it will be adored by audiences for many years to reach. With the movie’s language it’s not for children, but it definitely is for everyone else!

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Bellow! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The Fresh Series, and it’s a noble product! It’s also at a expedient designate, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are obvious to enjoy.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the modern He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so unpleasant. Trim, current artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly beautiful and unusual look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Novel Episodes: 5 out of 5.

These are the episodes the map I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the recent sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be satisfied to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its new greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to impartial over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant gape will watch compression artifacts prove up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and intriguing scenes point to up with about as worthy clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves considerable status on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features reach up a bit short in my belief. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the novel content actors, whose involvement strikes me as significant for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) acquire up the reminder of this light special features part. Hopefully Weep! Factory will continue to release the unusual series on DVD, in which case there are tremendous opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a sizable product at a expansive ticket, and bears the closest resemblance to the fresh broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are serene classics to those who remember them and will be more luscious for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really unbiased a half hour commercial became well-liked knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe fair because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very mad to fill these episodes in a current more affordable position. The position is being effect out by Bawl! Factory and they have always done an estimable job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This spot was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very elated to spy the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t prefer the more expensive unique sets are going to be wrathful at the chance to salvage this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this place 5 stars unbiased for the opportunity to fill these classic episodes in a genuine DVD site, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to new broadcast versions with a original stereo soundtrack created from the novel audio I’m more aroused than ever.

Some may say that this series was unprejudiced the next step in a tall advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the peep. Thanks For Your Time.

*It now appears that Sob! will also be releasing Transformer’s G1 in a complete series situation this summer. While I mediate this first season site is smooth huge for some I personally am more enraged for the complete series.
