This third episode in the series finds Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) retired from his police squad and married to the woman of his dreams (Priscilla Presley). But he is pressed back into action to infiltrate a group of terrorists who plan to blow up the Oscars. The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raqul Welch and Pia Zadora–and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahu. The takeoff on the dreadful production numbers that always drag out the Academy Awards will have you howling. –Marshall Fine

Set in northern Africa at the beginning of World War I, this unusual movie is narrated by a horse, voiced by Lukas Haas (Witness). While the gambit works for the most part, let’s face it, some sentences (”I had to find my place in the world”) just sound silly coming from equine lips. Lucky, as he will be called, is born on an African-bound ship but is separated from his mother when the horses swim for shore and the new colt simply can’t keep up. While mom and the rest of the gang are to work in the mines, Lucky is discovered by a young orphan who works as a stable hand. The mother-son pair are briefly reunited, but the stable’s stallion, Caesar, fatally injures her. The high-born Caesar also prevents his own foal, Beauty, from seeing Lucky and eventually forces the colt out on his own. The dour indignities heaped upon this horse, including a heart-wrenching parting with the boy, last for about an hour of this 78-minute movie before events begin to shift and Lucky is able to live up to his name. Although the movie is rated G, horse death, graphic fighting, and crulty toward the boy might be overwhelming to young or sensitive children. In spring 1993, a year before the Babylon 5 series was launched, the two-hour movie and series pilot “The Gathering” staked out the initial territory, introducing primary characters (some of whom would never appear again) and sketching the alliances and rifts in interplanetary diplomacy. The central story involves the attempted assassination of the newly arrived Vorlon, the mysterious Ambassador Kosh, at the hands of (perhaps) Commander Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O’Hare). This is the reedited cut released on video, a stronger, more engaging film than the original, but still a broad first stab at characters that would be redefined through the course of the show’s run.

“In the Beginning,” produced between the fourth and fifth seasons, packs all the history alluded to in “The Gathering”–and more–into a prequl stuffed to the hatches with the epic doings of Earth, Minbar, Narn, and Centauri in the days before the Babylon stations were built. Infused with epic sweep and storytelling confidence by producer-writer Michael J. Straczynski and his cast and crew, it’s an elegant, compelling addition to the Babylon 5 universe and a dramatic highlight of the series. It’s not an ideal introduction, though, as it gives away the shadowy history slowly revealed through the first three seasons. –Sean Axmaker

Fans of the Tales from the Crypt series and The Twilight Zone should appreciate this early-Eighties anthology of horror tales. “Terror in Topanga” is the tale of a woman terrorized by a maniac when she just has to make a trip to the store for some cigarettes. “The Bishop of Battle” is notable for a very young Emilio Estevez as a teen whose obsession with video games gets the better of him. There’s a definite nostalgia factor as he hustles other kids for money on the Paleozoic-era arcade games (listening to punk rock like Black Flag and Fear on an early-model Walkman the whole time). Perhaps the strongest segment involves B-movie stalwart Lance Henriksen as a priest who gives up the clergy and leaves his parish. While traveling across the desert, the hapless padre is pursud by a mysterious black Chevrolet pickup that systematically demolishes his car (shades of Spielberg’s Dul). “Night of the Rat,” rounding out the quartet, is just that; the story of a family who has a problem with a really big rat. While this little collection of tales tends to telegraph its punchlines well in advance, it still offers up a satisfying chill or two by way of its pacing and suspense, and with a bit more gore than the usual made-for-cable fare. –Jerry Renshaw
